7: Style and Editing
Chapter 7: Style and Editing
  • Butler, Jeremy G. “Style and Editing.” In Television: Critical Methods and Applications, 195-226. 3rd ed. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, 2007.

Chapter Outline/Notes: Whose eye view? The importance of planning and editing shots in order to create a continuous flow that serves the story being told.
Single-Camera Mode of Production: Explanation on the reasons the film industry adopted the single-camera mode of production.
  • While more expensive and less efficient, it also allows far more control over the image and the editing.
  • Stages of production: even before the shooting starts, there is the need for extensive planning of shots. After the shooting is over, the editing begins.
  • The 180º system relies upon heavy use of the 180º rule to maintain a proper perspective, without jarring the viewer.
  • Preserving the flow of time is as important as spatial perspective.

Multiple-Camera Mode of Production:
  • Not tied to any specific medium; multiple-camera productions may be shot on film, video, or broadcast live.
  • Generally edited less due to the format and time constraints.
  • Uses the 180º system extensively.
  • Action tends to be less tightly scripted, so it is not unusual for something to happen out of frame.

Related Course Outcomes:
  • Describe the functions and artistic responsibilities of each of the major members of a television crew: From the people who write the script to the people who edit the show after everything is finished being shot, various members of a television crew have specific jobs to accomplish to make a quality show.
  • Describe and apply principles of aesthetics used in the critical analysis of a television show: A big part of style and editing is being conscious of the spatial system, and arranging scenes in such a way that the audience is not distracted by having to figure out where exactly everything is taking place from one shot to the next.
  • Describe the characteristics and representative examples of major TV genres, such as sitcoms, social comedies, dramas, news, sports: Newscasting differs from most other types of TV genres in that they have a very limited time for each segment, thus the arrangement and editing must be done in such a fashion to maximize the amount of material that can be presented quickly.
  • Describe factors common to both national and local television news shows, such as topic selection, limitations on depth of news coverage, and importance of personal attributes of news anchors: Because of the time constraints, all news shows require a pretty limited format without much room for deviation. The opening lead is typically the first shot, followed by a quick sound bite, the reporters bridge between story elements, a “balancing” sound bite, and the reporter's final summary.
